Epicurean Joy

A week ago Elina Almén and Esaïas Kaku joined me for a photoshoot in Näsbypark. These two always have so much fun together, and their shared joy is infectious. We started the photoshoot outside by the water.

“Epicurean joy” usually refers to the kind of happiness described by Epicurus, the founder of Epicureanism.

Contrary to the modern stereotype that “epicurean” means indulgent pleasure-seeking, Epicurus argued that the highest form of joy comes from:

  • Freedom from physical pain.
  • Freedom from mental distress, fear, and anxiety.
  • Simple pleasures rather than luxury or excess.
  • Friendship, meaningful conversation, and peace of mind.
  • Living wisely and avoiding unnecessary desires.

For example, an Epicurean might find more joy in a quiet meal with close friends than in an extravagant feast.

Elina Almén, I really appreciate when the dancers bring some random fun prop along for the photoshoot.

For the second part of the photoshoot we headed in to the Green Room.
