In the ancient myth, Pygmalion sculpted a woman from ivory, shaping her into his ideal of beauty. He fell in love with what he had created, and the gods brought the statue to life. Galatea was born from another person’s imagination—an ideal given form.
Escaping Pygmalion begins where the myth leaves off.
It is about stepping beyond the versions of ourselves shaped by someone else’s gaze: the expectations, ideals, and projections we learn to carry as our own. About the quiet struggle between who we are and who we have been imagined to be.
And, ultimately, about finding the courage to step outside the shape we were given—to discover our own purpose, choose our own direction, and shape a destiny of our own.
This past Sunday, Alberte Mouritsen and Sky Pham from Balettakademien came out to Näsbypark for a dance photoshoot. I had photographed with Sky once before, but it was my first time working with Alberte, who just a few weeks ago joined the third-year students in the Professional Dance Education programme.
